The words usually translated as “roses” and “lilies” (chabatseleth, shoshan) are another source of confusion. Any number of other handsome wild flowers of the region – anemone, tulip, iris, and so on – may also have been meant by the Hebrews. But the best-informed scholars have concluded that we cannot know what particular flowers, if any, were intended and that the words should be understood to refer to any showy or brightly colored wild flowers.
